AquaChef Automatic Aquarium Fish Feeder 3 in x 5 14 in x 3 in

Going out of town? Don’t rely on out-of-date feeding blocks when you can use the AquaChef. It’s easy to give your fish up to eight feedings a day of flake, pellet, or crumbled food. Schedule single feedings for up to four different times, use the double-feeding feature to make any of those four two feedings, sixty seconds apart, or manually override the settings if you decide to give one more feeding yourself. The AquaChef also has an adjustable hatch to control the amount of food fed and to serve as a mixing stir bar to make sure the food isn’t clumped, just like you would. The moisture-resistant hopper is easy to clean and fill. Why let your fish starve when they can have their very own AquaChef?

User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars Very good, but has a couple short-comings
I like many of the features especially that the feeding is performed by a rotation performed at feeding time rather than a rotation that is continuous until the food finally falls out. It appears to be fairly well made.

I have two complaints that prevent me from scoring it as perfect:

- The programming has one “extra” step of indicating the number of feeding per cycle. If you do not enter anything it defaults to zero and your fish do not get fed. It is very easy to forget this last step if you are not going through step-by-step with the instructions. I think the default should be one feeding per cycle as I suspect this is what most people will desire and would prevent the fish from getting no food.

- Filling the feeder and cleaning the feeder is not easy as it is via a little rubber flap that looks a little fragile but regardless does not provide great access. I have a few Daily Double automatic fish feeders and they are much easier to fill and clean (but not as nice a feeder - The Daily Double is better in ease of programming (no programming involved) and ease of filling/cleaning but has different short-comings).

Of the two type of automatic feeders that I own, this is the better one.

5 Stars Great Item- I suggest buying!
Alot of people complain about how this is difficult to program, for many it may be, but if your relatively good with computers you shouldn’t have any problem figuring it out quickly! As far as performance goes, it only lasts as long as the batteries do. So make sure you have powerful enough batteries. Some you can buy really really cheap and they only last a week or 2 max. like 99 cents for 8 batteries. but I bought some 2 for a dollar and they have been up for over a month and doing great.- I have my feeder feed my two clownfish- and firefish a small amount twice a day!- and it works great!- I just feed them some frozen food with that every other day.

Overall I definitely recommend this feeder- very reliable, very cheap and very customizable.

Just make sure you have it on the right setting for amount of feeding- one time I had it on max instead of min and there was accidentally a dump full of food in tank- not good! -Also test feed it a few times in your hand to make sure it’s the right amount that you want.

1 Star Starving fish
I purchased this feeder so my fish would not go hungry while I was on vacation. The time and the feedings are set using a 24h clock, so it’s pretty hard to mess up. I did a trial run and everything seemed to be working fine. When I got back from vacation, my fish were not looking so hot. I fed them and they ate voraciously which got me wondering if the feeder was actually working. So I set my iphone alarm for 10:00 am and watched the feeder to see if it was dispensing food. Nothing. Then I set it for 11:00 am, and watched. Still nothing. So somewhere during the time I was gone, this feeder just quit working. Batteries are fine, clock is set right and so is the feeding time.

Maybe it will work for you, but it didn’t work for me.

4 Stars Bulky but good
This unit is a LOT bigger than it looks. Putting that aside, the timer/clock gains about 2 minutes a month but thats not of concern to me. Easy to adjust outpput from flake food to pellets but a pain to fill. The opening is on the inside of the drum but is awkward and small. If you use a funnel, the task is much easier. Hard to beat the price though, even with its drawbacks. The other feeder I use (Marineland) is much smaller, easier to fill and holds about the same amount of food but isn’t as easy to adjust output from pellets to flakes as this one is. The other unit costs a bit more but given the pros vs cons, they come out pretty much even. Both have about the same battery lifespan which is about a year between changes. If price isn’t a factor, I would choose another feeder but if on a tight budget, you can’t go wrong here.

5 Stars I can’t gush enough about this feeder!!
This feeder is Awesome! I figured out how to time it..that took a bit of time being that I am kind of slow. *hint* when youre up to the part where you’re pressing “mode” button to go to the different time values such as minutes or hours, you’ll see lastly the tiny number above it blinking. That number indicated the number of feedings so far (i.e. 1st feeding, 2nd feeding of the day, 3rd feeding, etc.) Anyway, that little number blinks. DON’T IGNORE THE LITTLE BLINKING NUMBER, this is IMPORTANT, it’s the one factor that actually decides if the feeder will function at all, without entering a value here, it won’t function. Press adjust once then you see 1 bar next to the tiny number blinking. This indicated the feeder will revolve once. Hit adjust again and that it will make it revolve twice when you feeds. That’s the only thing that confused me at first. But I LOVE this thing. It fed my fish flawlessly for my 2 week vacation and continued to do so 2 weeks after i got home and I shut it off. My salt water wish looked happy and well nourished when I arried home, and I was so nervous for them when I left as I never used this kind of feeder or left my fish for that long alone. But the feeder worked %100, no need to fear. AWESOME!

4 Stars Dependable and Worth having
Pros:

I left for the entire summer for my job and haven’t been home to feed the fish although a friend is changing the water that is by no means a daily thing. I didnt even bother using the batteries it came with as I never trust the batteries I get with items as they are often dead or near dead. Just put a new set of batteries in and your ready to go. The programming is easy and required little to no work. The instructions help but if you’ve ever programmed a digital watch its about the same level of complexity. I highly recommend this item. Pellets/small flakes are the way to go and a mix could work as well.

Cons:

Mount is not very good but easily modified to fit and aquarium. It is easily reversible as well.

1 Star junk
Was defective ….. the food drum wouldn’t rotate at preset times….it only rotated when manual button was used…needless to say, i was very disappointed with product

5 Stars Must have for aquarium owners
I had earlier used Penn-Plax fish feeder but that lasted only 1 month. It just stopped working for no reason. I like this product very much. Unlike many other reviewers, I did not find it difficult to follow the instructions to operate this automatic fish feeder. You may find it difficult, if you like to set it by yourself without reading the instructions stepwise. You can even keep 1-2 xerox copies of the instructions, if you have the habit of misplacing user manuals. This fish feeder allows to set 1-4 times food for fishes. There is ’single feeding’ and ‘double feeding’ options which could be helpful if you have many (my guess, 20+) fishes in your aquarium. I’m now tension-free about feeding my two lovely goldfishes when going out on vacation or night outs! Recommended for all the fish tank or aquarium owners.

5 Stars Works just fine but experiment with food types and quantity
I needed something for an upcoming trip and selected this based upon the reviews. And it works just fine and it’s nice to just be relieved of having to manage/monitor for daily feedings even when I’m around. So it’s become a permanent fixture on the tank. This is problem though cause I’ve got a nano cube and have the hood propped up for the time being until I use the supplied velco pads to attach to the hood with it closed.

I tried the small Spectrum pellets (which my fish don’t like anyways) but even at the smallest setting of the door opening it dispenses too much for my sized tank. I’ve tried the flakes and you need to make sure to break them up into smaller sizes so as to not block the opening when dispensing. Once figured out it’s perfect.

Like everyone’s said, programming isn’t that intuitive but once figured out it’s not a big deal. Shipping from Marine & Reef was quick too (shame that super saver shipping wasn’t applicable cause S&H was nearly 50% of the unit’s cost).

I bought this product to feed my fish on vacatioon. I thought I woould test it before I left on my vacation. The set up is very complicated. As others have said do not lose the instructions. I tested it manually to see how much feeding it would deliver and every time it would deliver a different amount of food. So your fish are left out for luck. I guess you get what you pay for. But for the week I am gone I am hoping it would at least keep my fish alive.

Excellent product. Simple, reliable. It will do everything you except from it and do it well.

Don’t listen to people who say it’s hard to set up (no offense). It’s terribly easy, even boring. Set it up one time and forget about feeding your fish.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Works well with some adjustments
I am happy with the AquaChef feeder. I like the simple design: at each programmed feeding time the clear plastic drum slowly rotates for one full turn, and the plastic door at the top of the drum falls open by gravity when it reaches the bottom, releasing the food. The door shuts again as it rotates back to the top position, preventing water from (easily) getting into the drum. A small plastic paddle is set to control how much food is released each time. The feeder works on two AA batteries (included). Mine has been working regularly for about two weeks now, with only these minor adjustments needed:

1. My aquarium has a metal lip around the top edge of it on which rests the glass aquarium cover. Even though the lip is not very wide, it was wide enough to prevent the clamp from clamping properly. However, the clamp is removable (it slides off), and the feeder comes with a square of velcro to attach the feeder’s base directly to the top of the aquarium cover. I wanted the feeder to be a little higher above the water level, so I sawed off the bottom of the clamp and rubber-banded the top part of the clamp to a handle on the glass aquarium cover.

2. When I first tried the feeder out, I set the plastic paddle to a medium setting, but because the fish food I use is small pellets, it dropped an ENORMOUS amount of food into the aquarium. I would recommend doing some practice runs into a bowl to make sure it is releasing the right amount of food.

3. Once I had the right amount set, I let the feeder do its job for a few days, but because the airstone was right under the feeder, the bottom of the plastic drum was staying wet because of the bubbles rising to the surface. After a few days, some water did seep through a seam between the drum and its plastic backing, and the pellets began to get a bit damp. However, I moved the airstone to the other side of the aquarium, and now the feeder is staying dry and working fine.

Programming the feeder wasn’t too difficult (as other reviewers have said, it’s like setting an alarm on a digital watch), though I had to read the instructions a few times and experiment to figure it out. You can program up to four feeding times per day, and each of these can be a single feeding or a double feeding (in a double feeding the drum turns twice at each feeding instead of once, with 60 seconds between turns). I like the fact that there is also a button you can press to feed immediately (though this doesn’t cancel any of the programmed feedings). This was helpful in testing it out.

So, I find that once it was mounted and adjusted properly for my aquarium and food, it is pretty dependable.

5 Stars FISH FEEDER
SEEMS TO WORK GREAT. EASY TO PROGRAM. DOES NOT DISPENSE A LOT OF FOOD SO IF YOU HAVE A LOT OF FISH YOU WOULD HAVE TO PROGROM MORE FEEDINGS
