5 Stars Perfect for 2 gallon tank.
Brings the water temp in a 2 gallon tank to the perfect level. The tank is on a cold granite countertop in the kitchen, where the air temp is about 72 degrees.

I would say it’s only good for a 2 gallon tank. Only downside is that it will bring the water temp up 5 degrees, so you do have to watch the surrounding temperature.

1 Star Not very “mini”, and keeps water way too warm.
I bought this unit to replace a broken heater, and with the house thermostat set at 68 degrees, overnight, this heater had my 2.5 gallon temporary aquarium at close to 90 degrees, and this is with the aquarium light never having been turned on! I lowered the house thermostat to 65 degrees, but the tank still remained well above 85. Today, I lowered the house thermostat to 60 degrees while I am at work, to see if this reduces the tank temp. I am afraid to just turn the heater off completely because I don’t want to kill my fish. Remarkably, they seem to be doing okay and look healthy and active.

In any case, this heater is not adjustable, so I need to purchase yet another heater with better controls so I can slowly get the aquarium temp. back down to a more reasonable temp. range.

I should have just spent the money on a proper replacement in the first place, but when I read that this unit warms a 2 gallon aquarium by approx. 5 degrees, I thought it would be perfect, as this would have brought my aquarium temp. to approx 73 degrees, which is what was at before the old heater broke…just right for the two female platies I have in this temporary tank. This heating unit has danergously raised my tank temp. by slightly over 20 degrees, however! Without this heater, the tank was at slightly below 70 degrees.

Either I have a malfunctioning unit, or this is a horrible heater.

Also, in spite of being a mini heater, it takes up a large amount of space, and the one I received is not flat. It likes to curl and bend, which makes it more cumbersome in the little tank.

Thank goodness this tank set up is temporary, while I wait for my larger tank to cycle. I hope my poor platies survive this ordeal.

2 Stars MINI HEATER Aquarium Heater 7.5W for Tanks up to 5 Gallons UL
This heater doesn’t hold the temperature even in 2.5 gallon tank. My betta fish was always in the cold water. The temperature didn’t rise even to 78F.I am very unhappy with this product. It was OK for 1 week then the heater was cold itself. I don’t know why it stopped heating, maybe it broke.

5 Stars Ideal for Betta owners
Last weekend I had just completed a water change for my two male Bettas when I noticed that the temperature was 72 degrees. For Bettas, they need to be in water that is at least 74 to 76 degrees. So I made a unexpected run to the nearest major pet retail store and bought the Mini Heater. The tanks I have is a 1 gallon Mini Bow junior Aquarium and a large Kritter Keeper. I found that the Mini Heater was ideal for the Kritter Keeper. The temperature of the water got to the ideal temperature for my Betta Osirius which was 78 degrees and remained at that temperature over night. The Mini Heater in my Mini Bow aquarium heated up too quickly and got as high as 82 degrees (this led me to order online a new larger home for my other Betta Anubis). I really like how silent the heater is. I think this heater is more appropriate for 2 gallon tanks than 5 gallon tanks judging by a few less than impressed reviewers. I am thinking that the more room and water in the tank, the less higher the temperatures will rise). For Betta owners who have smaller tanks and bowls than 5 gallons, I wholeheartedly would recommend this heater.

5 Stars Great Little Heater
I bought this for my betta’s 1 gallon bowl, and at first I was afraid it’d be too much for such a small bowl, but it works great! Though the temperature fluctuates several degrees, it keeps the temperature within a few degrees of 80, perfect for my betta. Since I’ve gotten this heater, he’s been a lot more active now that the water is a better temperature for him. It’s also small enough so it’s not obtrusive and you can easily hide it behind some plants or under the gravel, I hardly notice it in the bowl anymore.

Tips in Selecting an Aquarium Tank

Thursday, October 1st, 2009

There are many things to consider when selecting an aquarium tank. One of them is the size of the aquarium. To determine the ideal size for you, you have to know the kind of fish that you are putting in the aquarium and exactly how many of them. Also, try to find out how big your fish can grow. If you buy a fish without finding out its maximum growth size, you may someday find your aquarium tank too small or too crowded. Remember to choose the aquarium that will be big enough for all the fish at maximum growth size.

The amount of water that the fish needs is also a factor to look into. Follow this rule of thumb to find out how much water your fish will need. A fish that will grow to adult size of less than 4 inches, like guppies and tetras, will require a gallon of water for every inch of fish. A large fish like the cichlid will need at least 55 gallons and the angelfish, at least 29 gallons. It is essential that your aquarium tank is able to hold the amount of water that all your fish need.

Size of aquarium tanks vary from two and a half gallons to several hundred gallons. They come in various shapes too: rectangle, round, bow front, hexagonal or cylindrical. If you’re a beginner, you might want to buy the prepackaged kit that contains all that a beginner will need to start. This may include the aquarium outfitted already with filter, heater and light. Pick the smaller tanks for starters for minimum maintenance. Just remember, not too small or your fish will not have enough room to be healthy.

You will have two choices in materials for your aquarium tank. Glass tanks are generally less expensive and more available. Glass will not scratch easily but can be very heavy. They also are not as flexible as acrylic so shapes are limited. Acrylic tanks, on the other hand, being lighter, boast of a wider range of shapes and sizes that you can pick from. They are, however, more expensive and more easily scratched.

A filled aquarium will weigh about 10 pounds for every gallon of water. So a large aquarium will really be very heavy. Bear this in mind when choosing your stand. You do not want to put it on anything that might collapse under the heavy weight. There are specialized aquarium stands built in metal or wood that could provide the necessary support for your aquarium. Some even have compartments for your aquarium supplies. Be sure also that your aquarium comes with a lid or a ‘hood’ and that it’s the right size for your tank.

After making your choice and purchasing an aquarium tank, put it in a bathtub or your backyard and fill it with the right amount of water. Connect and plug all the equipment like the heater and the filter and let it stand overnight. You should always do this before putting in the fish to determine if there are leaks and that your equipment works properly. With the correct aquarium tank size and type, and proper precautions in ensuring the safety of your fish, you guarantee them a happy and healthy life in your aquarium tank.
