Enhance Your Residence With A Choice Of Fish Tanks

Friday, March 5th, 2010

It might not be an obvious choice, but including fish tanks as a way to beautify your home is a superb idea. If you have kids, a habitat is a wonderful addition to your home and a relatively easy way to keep a pet. Children can learn responsibility by way of having to feed the animals and clean their home properly. It is educational in that it also teaches a child, in their formative years, how to breed and take care of another living creature.

Water features come in a variety of styles and designs. The different types of creatures living inside will fascinate your children. Your adult guests will more than likely take a particular interest in your new design addition as well.

Keeping fish does mean responsibility. Don’t decorate the inside of your tank until after talking to someone at your local pet store. You can add some water plants and logs and watch them play hide and seek as well as improve the look of your habitat.

When picking an aquatic feature, keep in mind your home’s interior design. If you prefer colors that pop and are eye catching, then it is best to have one that is in keeping with this style. Choose creatures that are unique and colorful and will add to your home’s decor. If you prefer a style that is more muted, simple, then your unit should also be similar in design.

Water and fish are considered relaxing and water features create a calming atmosphere. It is also an excellent conversation starter during any get together. It will enchant the children and attract the adults. Many interior designers create wonderful spaces where they have prominently featured an aquatic feature. A whole area in your home can be set aside for extremely large tanks and that would certainly add a touch of luxury.

Fish in an office create a soothing, serene air to a room. A great stress reliever! They are an ideal attraction for a doctor’s office, particularly a pediatrician. These swimming friends will certainly ease a worried child’s mind! It is not unusual to see large-style units in corporate offices as they can create a rich, desirable look, a true sign of success/money!

A number of things should be kept in mind when keeping an aquarium. A decent filtration system will ensure the water is well oxygenated and cleaning it often will keep the fish healthy. The food should be administered on time and a thermometer should be used to keep an eye on the temperature of the water. The tanks also need to have correct lighting installed to keep the occupants calm.

Tanks with fancy multi-hued species enhance any space whether it is at home or in the office. There are numerous varieties available in different sizes. According to the rules of feng shui, keeping goldfish at home can enhance wealth and promote business. Choose wisely and maintain your fish tank well to enhance your home.

Adding a fish tank to your home is an excellent home decor idea. However there are certain accessories you will also need. Things like fish tank stands or even a fish tank coffee table. Whatever you need you will find some free information about it at our website.

Rules Of Thumb For Maintaining A Successful Aquarium

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

Although you are new at fishkeeping, it’s possible for you to have a beautiful aquarium at home. Ensuring the health of the fish, plants, and other organisms in your tank can be tricky, but the rules on keeping an aquarium are quite simple.

The tank material and shape matters.

Consider buying rectangular glass aquariums. Although aquariums come in many kinds, shapes, and sizes, the better option for beginners are glass aquariums, as they are not as expensive as acrylic ones. They are also less prone to scratches and discoloration, so maintaining them won’t be so complicated. As for the shape, narrow cylindrical and spherical aquariums may be pleasing to the eye but are not always suitable for the fish. These types have too little water surface open to air. Fish get oxygen and discharge carbon dioxide through the water surface, so narrower aquariums can be suffocating for fish.

Pay attention to details.

If you want to reduce the risk of contaminating the water in your tank and poisoning the fish, know which materials are dangerous and keep it out of your tank. Since glass aquariums are not prone to scratches and yellowing, you get to avoid using polishing compounds that are normally toxic. Other harmful substances include detergent, paint, plastic, and soap. It’s also important to keep even the slightest hint of metal out of your tank because it poisons the fish.

Buy accessories and decors only from pet shops.

Coral, coral sand, marble chips, and other limestone products are among the materials that should not be placed inside your fish tank. Bits of these dissolve easily and make the water tough for the fish to live in. If you want to keep your fish alive and happy, the best choices are granite, quartz, and sandstone, minerals that can be used to decorate glass aquariums. If you don’t know these rules, you will simply think that any material which seems to look great in an aquarium is suitable. Therefore, it’s best to only use accessories and decor that you can buy from stores selling aquarium supplies, as they are made from materials that are safe for the fish.

Get the location right the first time.

The major setback to glass aquariums is that they’re heavy and more prone to breaking and leaking. Imagine how much heavier any tank is going to be once you fill it with water. For this reason, be sure to choose the right location for your tank right away, as moving it might cause the glass to crack.

Where is the best place to put your aquarium?

Aside from wind- and heat-generating equipment, constant and direct exposure to sunlight tends to overheat the water in your tank. Aside from that, it also causes rapid algae growth. Minimal presence of algae can be beneficial, but if it becomes excessive, algae will turn your tank water green. Algae are not only unattractive, but they also compete against fish and other plants for scarce nutrients in your tank. To avoid these risks, avoid direct sunlight except for very short periods. You may use artificial aquarium lighting instead.

Other aquarium care tips

To protect fish and plants inside your aquarium, place a cover on top. Some people think that using a glass cover will cut the supply of oxygen in an aquarium. This is a myth, however. Aquarium covers are designed such that they can allow adequate supply of air into the tank. Finally, avoid moving your tank once it’s been filled, as this may cause the glass to break or leak.

Even a beginner like you can maintain an aquarium successfully. All you need to do is to follow these simple yet effective tips. You’ll certainly be fulfilled as you watch your fish swim happily in your own aquarium.

1 Star fish-zole
The product shipped to me was not the one shown on the picture. Different manufacture!

5 Stars Works wonders!
Why make your fish suffer? This stuff works - and the price is right!

5 Stars Great deal
A person from the Great Dane playgroup I bring my Danes to recommended fish zole when we were talking about ghiardia (sp?), which my dogs end up with frequently as they like to play and drink the water at the Minnehaha dog park along the Mississippi River here in Minneapolis. Treatment of anything in danes can be expensive due to their size and the large doses required for effectiveness. Add to that the huge mark up that the vet tacks on for a few pills and things can get out of hand quickly. This is a great product that does the same thing as what the vet prescribes and costs a fraction of what the vet charges. I also bought some of the Fish Mox at the same time to keep on hand in case needed.

5 Stars Thomas Laboratories
I have purchased many products from Thomas Laboratories over the years. The product is always consistent and performs well.

5 Stars Discus Medication
Medication was sent immediately and came in good condition. Good value for the price. The pills dissolved very quickly.

Planting in an Aquarium - Like Using Chopsticks

Friday, May 8th, 2009

Planting with planting sticks

Making a nice anchoring of rooted plants in a filled aquarium seems like a simple matter — except to those who have tried it without proper equipment. That is especially true when the sand is not as deep as it should be. Sticking them in by hand, water up to elbows, is never satisfactory.

Pushing the plants down is easy enough, but to make them stay, and to get the roots spread out and nicely covered is another matter.

One of the exasperating things about the job when working without tools is that while trying to anchor one plant, another gets knocked loose.

These troubles can be avoided by the simple expedient of using a pair of thin planting sticks, especially with a shallow notch cut in the ends. The edges of the ends should also be rubbed slightly smooth, so that they will not cut or bruise the plants in pressing against them.

The sticks should be about 3/8 x 3/8 inches, and from 12 to 20 inches long, according to the depth of the water. Simply grasp the plant between two sticks and press it into the sand to the desired depth. Now comes the important part. Hold the plant down with one stick and push the surrounding sand against the plant with the other. If there are roots sticking above the soil, treat them the same way. Push down with one stick and cover with the other.

Working in this way will not disturb any of the other plants, and a much better view of the whole scene can be had than by working only with the hands and arms.

Where a plant like Giant Sagittaria is extra buoyant, and the sand is not deep, it may be desirable to place a small stone or two next to the plant.

Some aquarists, use strips of thin lead wrapped around the plant just above the roots, when they tend to float. A small amount of lead does no appreciable harm to the water.

However, with the use of planting sticks nearly all underwater plants can be nicely managed. They are particularly useful, when through some accident in a planted aquarium, a single plant has become partially or wholly dislodged. The repair is easily made.

The foregoing dimensions of the sticks need not be followed closely. The general idea is to have them thin, and yet broad enough in which to cut a notch that will be effective. A pair of rulers is better than nothing.

To partially repeat my first paragraph, many aquarists make the double mistake of having the sand both too deep and too fine in size of grains. Both of these factors increase the tendency of sand to turn black at the bottom. It should be only deep enough to safely hold down the roots, and be coarse like building sand, with grains not less than the size of a pin head. A limited depth of sand, while desirable, makes planting more tedious without the aid of planting sticks.
